When nowhere is safe to hide, where do you go to escape the monsters?

In a few short days, 37 year old Emma Rossi's hard work will finally pay off. She will don her cap and gown and graduate with a degree in nursing, but not before she loses her first patient and is confronted with a new reality. In Cape Coral, Florida, a storm approaches. The dead are coming back to life.

And they're hungry.

Infection ravages the Eastern Seaboard with alarming speed while attempts to contain the spread of infection fail. Within days, a small pocket of panicked survivors are all that remain of civilization. Fighting to survive the zombie apocalypse alongside her husband Jake and their dog Daphne, Emma comes face-to-face with her worst nightmare.

Relying on snarky wit and sheer determination, she is forced to commit atrocious acts to protect her family and avoid joining the ranks of the undead.

Time of Death Book 1 Induction A Zombie Novel eBook Shana Festa

I love reading zombie books written by women, and Shana Festa’s Time of Death: Induction was no exception. Festa offers a unique take on the zombie apocalypse. The main character, Emma Rossi, is perfectly flawed in a way that makes her endearing to readers. You can’t help but root for the clumsy protagonist and her yappy dog, Daphne. I must say that I can’t stand zombie stories that kill dogs (I’m pointing my finger at I am Legend – shame, shame). I’ll try not to include any spoilers in my review, so I won’t give away what happens to the dog, but I will admit there are several nail-biting (paw-biting?) moments in the book.

Emma and her husband, Jake, are at home when a zombie infection spreads through their city. The couple is soon forced to leave their house and venture into the dangerous streets to find another safe haven. Oh, did I mention there’s also a hurricane pummeling their town? The couple and their dog run into quite a few snafus but are fortunate enough to come across a group of soldiers. They work constantly to keep the group of civilians safe, but they are no match for the undead.

The writing is solid and the plot moves along quickly. Emma is a strong character with a snarky attitude but is determined to find the silver lining in the darkest of times. A lot of the book is Emma’s inner monologue about what’s happening around her. In my opinion, the most important aspect of a zombie book is having a likeable main character. If readers don’t love the protagonist then the story is going to be difficult to get through. Shana Festa has done a brilliant job of creating a character who’s loveable, and you can’t help rooting for her.

Zombie books rarely have happy endings, but there was a bit of hope at the conclusion of Time of Death, leaving room for the sequel. The second book in the series, Time of Death: Asylum, was published in December of 2014. I’m looking forward to cracking open the next book. If you’re a fan of action-packed yet character-driven zombie tales, then I highly recommend you read the Time of Death books.

Time of Death Book 1 Induction A Zombie Novel eBook Shana Festa Reviews

Well, this was a pleasant little breath of fresh air in a usually grim genre. Rather than a dour, haunted, Rick Grimes-clone, Festa's protagonist is a usually chipper, definitely scatalogically-obsessed nursing student. As the zombie apocalypse strikes the Florida coastline the characters proceed to behave like fairly well-adjusted adults trying to make do in an emergency, sparing us the usual scenes of hysterics and dick-measuring that have become all but de rigueur for zombie stories. We're then treated to a tornado, which is also something I've never seen before. Overall, the word of the day is originality.

I do have one complaint. This horrible, horrible dog that the main character, Emma, insists on taking with her everywhere. I don't know if the dog was supposed to be charming or what, but it was just such a freaking liability I have no idea why anyone would tolerate keeping it around. I cheered the first time the zombies caught it, but, sadly, it escaped. Think of the cat from Alien on metaphorical steroids.

Still, even the dog was not distracting enough to deduct a star, and I suppose dog fanciers might even enjoy that part. So, five stars for a clever, unusual tour-de-force from first-time author Shana Festa. This is as good as horror fiction gets.
Induction is an awesome debut novel! The plot is based around Emma Rossi, a 37 year old nursing student, her husband Jake, and her dog Daphne. Emma was at the hospital when patient 1 came in. The woman had been bitten by someone at a fast food drive-through and was taken to the ER. Luckily, Emma left for the night just after the woman died… before she turned. But that didn’t save her or her family from the horrors that followed. They’re chased from their home and on the run trying to escape the devastation; to stay alive as long as possible. They go through hell and ba… well, there really isn’t any coming back from this brand of hell.

The pacing of the story was incredible. I was sucked in from the moment I started reading. That’s not an easy task for an author since I read so many zombie novels, but the storytelling is quite remarkable. I stayed up far too late at night reading this one because I refused to put it down. I had to know what was going to happen. I love the personal knowledge about nursing Shana weaved into the story as well. It made it believable for me. And the gore… oh, how I love the gore!

There were two things I didn’t particularly care for in the story. One Adam’s feelings. (Adam is a guy they meet up with along the way, along with over a hundred other survivors.) His declaration seemed to come out of nowhere. There had been no mention of him starting to fall in love prior to him just blurting it out, so it felt awkward and out of place. Two There was actually too much death. There were characters from the group that I would’ve like to see move forward with the series. I just wish one or two of them would have made it. Ok… I feel like I’m giving things away, even trying to be vague, so I’m going to stop here.

Overall, Induction is an AWESOME zombie novel that will definitely resonate with me for some time to come. I am excited about the next book in the series! If you love zombies like I do, I highly recommend grabbing yourself a copy of this one as soon as you can.
