*Reviewed by Cheryl for Sinfully Gay Romance Book reviews ~ 4.5 Stars*Whilst this wasn’t the best book I’ve ever read it definitely wasn’t the worst by any means. I was going to give it a 4* but it got the extra .5* for making me cry – more than once.
Right from the start, I felt Jerry’s pain. All he wanted was to be free of his family’s strict traditions. He yearned to be free to love as he chose, even though he knew that could never happen. He fell hard and suffered for it, then the unthinkable happens and he gets pregnant his very first time. That was never going to end well, especially when the man he was supposed to have married turns out to be a narcissistic psychopath.
I definitely did not see the twist coming. I’d been pretty certain we hadn’t seen the last of Ty, and given the title, I thought there might have been a kidnapping involved, but wow, what actually happened surprised the heck out of me.
There were times when the story was a bit preachy and sometimes when it was jerky but on the whole it flowed nicely. It was plumped up with plenty of emotion – obviously as it made me cry – although I felt there could have been a little more description. I was pleased, though, because I often find myself on the other side of the window, and if a book is going to have a flaw I would much prefer it to be too little description than too little emotion.
I particularly liked the characterization in this book. All the characters, good and bad, main and supporting, are fleshed out and complex. Jerry is a complete mess, Rex is a solid, dependable influence and Kevin is…well, always right. I have a “thing” about richness of character and dialogue. If a book can’t engage me with the characters then no matter how good the story is or how fine the quality of the writing, it’s lost me. The characters here were so engaging and their dialogue, on the whole, was natural and flowed well. When it was meant to be formal it sometimes wandered into stilted or preachy, but this was the only time it fell down.
The second half of the book was a shock. I didn’t see the twist coming and it took me a while to adjust. From there on the surprises kept coming and there were times when I felt a little overwhelmed and lost what was actually going on. It seemed as if as soon I got things straight in my head, something came along and shook them all up again, until I didn’t know what was truth and what wasn’t, and the truth I did know – or thought I knew – was utterly confusing. It sounds frustrating and annoying and in another book it might have been, but somehow the strength of the characters and the story kept me going when things got complex, and it all got sorted out in the end. Kind of.
The excitement never let up and bowled me along to the very last page, and my biggest complaint about this book is that it ended. I very much hope I’ll get to read more about Jerry, Rex and Michael at some point.
If you’re looking for a straightforward, sweet romance, stay away from this book or you’ll hurt your brain. If you’re looking for something more complex with a lot of story and a need to keep on your mental toes, then get excited for this one.

This was a great story! The book had so many twists and turns. The story isvery well written. I would definitely recommend this book to friends!
This book had me sucked in from the beginning. What a ride!
Poor Jerricho just wants to find love, and not be forced into a marriage with someone he doesn't know when he turns 25. But, being a prince of the Anzuni clan, he has no choice. He has rebelled as long as he could, but now with only months until he turns 25, he has no choice but to reign things in and follow tradition. Too bad he's head over heels for his boss, Rex. One passionate night together leads to Jerricho becoming pregnant, which then sends those that want to harness his power into overdrive.
Powerful, powerful stuff. The love between Rex and Jerricho was heart-wrenching. I won't lie that I had tears in my eyes a few times. The brutality they and the others who were experimented on experienced caused such an emotional roller coaster ride (and more teary eyes). Then the traitors in their midst... even those in the Anzuni council and the U.S. Government?! Every time I thought I had things figured out, everything would change and I felt like I had to catch up again. Just... wow.
Then the ending came and everything was shaken up... again. I cannot believe who their rescuer turned out to be. Well done Jake C. Wallace, well done.
I've read a few of JC Wallace's books and when I saw this one included demons, mpreg, and a prince, I was in. The world building grabbed me, this race that lives alongside humans. From there it is politics, family expectations, and following your heart.
Then the story takes a dark turn and while it is edge of your seat suspense and terror. . . For me it went on too long and I ended up skipping pages. Hope where there is none, a way out. . . Only to be caged again? No, not my type of story.
What gave this one a low rating is the lackluster ending. So. If the experiments with the growth hormone went wrong on children, what will that do to Michael? Because the growth hormones affected the pregnancy, Jerry, and Jerry's blood. .. Which also affected everyone that was given his blood. No idea how all this will impact those captured with Jer, the long term effects. And what about Ty and his little girl? Will she grow up with her father? And the bigger question . . Is the council satisfied with the tutoring Jer and Rex got, to fulfill their commitment to their people? Never mind the gaps in the councilmen's seats. . . . Or how politics will fall. Yeah. Unless this is the start of a series, this one ends on a huge cliffhanger, all these unresolved issues, problems, situations, and the overall health of the prince and his mate. And after all is said and done, Jerricho may have wanted his freedom but now he's even more protected and will never feel safe. It's really sad. - Dan's Wife
